EPILEPSY AND SEIZURE ASSOCIATION OF MANITOBA

Epilepsy and Seizure Association of Manitoba provides information, education, support groups (Winnipeg and Brandon), and one to one information sessions to people living with epilepsy/seizures and their families. We provide a newsletter. We believe that interacting with people at the grassroots level is just as important as the research towards a cure for epilepsy. We are available for presentations at schools, businesses, staff training, senior centres, on an as-requested bases throughout the province of Manitoba. A cure may be found tomorrow, but someone needs your help today.

The Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba is a self-help, peer support organization, offering on-site and phone peer support, education, and support groups to people living with mood disorders and their family, friends and loved ones. We also provdie on-site education for any persons, organizations, employers etc. who wish to know more about mood disorders, what they are, how they are treated, and how to assist persons with these disorders.

About the Organization: The Stroke Recovery Association of British Columbia is a non-profit association that is committed to assisting stroke survivors and their caregivers throughout the province to improve their overall quality of life. With over 1500 members in our 39 branches throughout BC, our association focuses on community re-integration for stroke survivors: providing an encouraging and empowering atmosphere through support, education, physical and mental stimulation, and communication. The Cancer Association,organized in 1967 as an all volunteer agency providing services to indigent cancer victims, changed its focus in 1970 to "provide services to all cancer victims in need" rather than just the indigent. Cancer is non-exclusive with respect to race, sex, age, religion or financial situation and can devastate a family financially as well as emotionally. The other focus of the Cancer Association is to educate the community on the risks of developing cancer and the simple lifestyle changes that can be made to greatly reduce those risks.

THE EPILEPSY ASSOCIATION OF THE MARITIMES

The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia (EANS), a registered charity founded in 1980, has nearly 1,000 members. Overseen by a Board of Directors and employing one full-time staffer, EANS is the only epilepsy organization in the Maritimes. It provides information and offers counselling, advocacy, a quarterly newsletter, and a classroom education program (featuring “Kids on the Block” puppets) for students in Grades 4-6. Since 1980, EANS has reached out to almost 30,000 people through its education programs, and information/counseling/advocacy services. There are local Chapters province-wide and in New Brunswick, and a social/recreational club in Halifax. A new children's program is now being piloted. In 2008, 9-year old Cassidy Megan (an EANS member) started “Purple Day for Epilepsy – March 26” with the help of Epilepsy Nova Scotia. This is now a global campaign in which supporters around the world wear purple to raise epilepsy awareness. EANS continues to spearhead the campaign.
