Fox Chase's mission is to reduce the burden of human cancer through the pursuit of knowledge in basic biological research; to conduct research specifically related to cancer causes, prevention, and treatment; and to apply this knowledge to the prevention of cancer and the treatment of cancer patients. Fox Chase has the oldest and third-largest cancer center support grant from the National Cancer Institute and is the oldest cancer specialty hospital in the nation. From the website: "American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) was founded by Danny Thomas in 1957 to be the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and its sole mission is to raise the funds and awareness necessary to operate and maintain the hospital. In the years ahead, an estimated 89% of the funds necessary to sustain and grow St. Jude must be raised by ALSAC from generous donors."
