Our Mission

A skiing accident at the age of 19 left Sam Sullivan with quadriplegia and exposed him to the reality of the obstacles in the environment around him. Sam envisioned an organization that would help anyone with a significant physical disability to establish their independence and reconnect with the community. In 1987, Sam founded the Tetra Society of North America with the goal of engaging skilled volunteers to construct custom assistive devices to enhance the lives of people with mobility and dexterity impairments. Tetra has expanded to include chapters in over 40 communities across Canada and the United States. This unique program facilitates greater independence and inclusion within communities. Over the years, projects have addressed a huge range of challenges, from devices that help at home, at work, and even the wheelchair attachment Sam used as Vancouver’s Mayor to wave the flag at the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Turin Olympics.
