Pledge to make a difference, together.
It is estimated that in 2007 Africa had 11.6 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS alone (UNAIDS 2008). In addition to HIV/AIDS, many more children in the developing world are orphaned due to extreme poverty, armed conflict and other causes.
Some of the world's greatest scientists, dedicated philanthropists and international organizations are deeply committed to fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic and alleviating the suffering caused by disease, conflict and poverty. While these high profile efforts are imperative, local communities are struggling, in the face of overwhelming numbers, to provide vital care and support to orphaned children in rural settings. Within these regions, community leaders use the very limited funding available to them to keep children off the streets, fed, and educated, in an effort to help them to break the cycle of poverty. These are the community leaders that we wish to support as they work on the frontlines in the fight against HIV/AIDS and poverty.
