FRIENDS OF HONDURAN CHILDREN

At any given time, there are thousands of impoverished, orphaned or abandoned children fighting just to survive in the unforgiving streets and desperately poor rural regions of Honduras. Their existence is bleak. It's defined by hunger, violence, drug abuse, prostitution and exploitation. It's an existence of fear, heartache and despair. But it doesn't have to be that way. With the help of our fellow Canadians and our Honduran partner Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, Friends of Honduran Children has set out to rescue these children and give them what they urgently need - a home and a future – helping them to transform themselves from victims of poverty, abuse and crime into functioning, independent, self-reliant, contributing members of society.

Scleroderma Society of Ontario

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease. The body's immune system attacks the hosts body by over-producing collagen which causes fibrosis thoughout the body. It may be limited in nature or systemic. It occurs predominately in women ages 40-55, although it also afflicts men and children. For some, this is a chronic but often disabling disease; for others it is severely life-threatening. Exact figures are unknown but it is suspected that there may be up to 40,000 people in Canada suffering from this disease. It is considered a rare disease and is relatively unfamiliar to the general public, so raising funds to support research is a difficult challenge. Who is the SSO? The Scleroderma Society of Ontario was founded in late 1985 with the help of The Arthritis Society. The Scleroderma Society of Ontario programs are entirely run by a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to promoting public awareness, advancing patient wellness and supporting research.

FLYING DOCTORS OF CANADA

Canadians have a wide spread reputation for charity, volunteering and commitment to humanitarian efforts around the world and the Flying Doctors of Canada (FDOC) are no exception. The Flying Doctors of Canada is a Non-Governmental, Non-Profit Organization made up of doctors, nurses, other healthcare workers and general volunteers who are committed to charity and helping those who are most in need. Established in May of 2006 by Drs. Benjamin Cavilla, Daniel Kopac and Rodrigo Onell, all graduates of the University of Alberta, Canada, FDOC was born out of the realization that there are relatively few opportunities for Canadian healthcare professionals to become involved in international health initiatives and charity projects under the auspices of a formal Canadian group. There are many such volunteer opportunities originating with our colleagues in the United States, however it was felt that it is our duty as Canadians to make a unique and Canadian contribution to global efforts.

Health
Homes of Joy Inc.

It is estimated that in 2007 Africa had 11.6 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS alone (UNAIDS 2008). In addition to HIV/AIDS, many more children in the developing world are orphaned due to extreme poverty, armed conflict and other causes. Some of the world's greatest scientists, dedicated philanthropists and international organizations are deeply committed to fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic and alleviating the suffering caused by disease, conflict and poverty. While these high profile efforts are imperative, local communities are struggling, in the face of overwhelming numbers, to provide vital care and support to orphaned children in rural settings. Within these regions, community leaders use the very limited funding available to them to keep children off the streets, fed, and educated, in an effort to help them to break the cycle of poverty. These are the community leaders that we wish to support as they work on the frontlines in the fight against HIV/AIDS and poverty.
