The JMU Foundation, first established as the Madison College Foundation in 1969, exists to "Promote the welfare, efficiency, service to the public and objectives of James Madison University and to encourage private gifts of money, securities, land or other property of whatever character for such purposes." During our 30 year history, we have played an important role in the university's dramatic growth from a state teachers college to a multipurpose university. The ability to purchase or receive property the university needs in a timely manner has made many of the buildings and facilities, essential to the JMU of today, possible.

Alverno was founded in 1887 by the School Sisters of St. Francis for the purpose of educating women. The college provides educational opportunities to all women, regardless of socio-economic background. Well over 50% of Alverno students are the first in their families to attend college and more than 70% qualify for need-based financial aid. Alverno boasts the highest percentage of minority students for any public or private college in Wisconsin. To serve students of modest means, Alverno tuition is kept as affordable as possible and is among the lowest of Wisconsin's 21 private colleges.
